NFL Football Handicapping – AFC Quarter Pole Report

It is hard to imagine but practically one quarter of the regular season has come to pass.  It is indeed a time to reflect and see what has come to fruition from our pre-season analysis and re-evaluate some teams that have surprised one way or another.  Most importantly, it is a time to reflect on the fact that the standings we see today, in reality could still be quite different than what we see in January.  With out further delay let’s take a look at each conference via divisional breakdown and current standing.  This week we take a look at the AFC followed by the NFC next week.

AFC East

Buffalo Bills 4-0 SU 3-1 ATS – It has been a long time since the Patriots were not at the top of their division going into week 5, and even longer since the Bills were the team ahead of them.  4 games against some not so stiff competition has helped this team.  The true test will come later on in the year. Special teams and taking care of the football can take a team a long way and will be their key.

New England 2-1 SU 1-2 ATS – Week 1 was their turning point and it will be interesting to see how they come out of the bye.  They still have enough talent and coaching to keep them as an elite challenging team but they are far from head and shoulders above the rest.

NY Jets 2-2 SU 2-2 ATS – Brett Favre will continue to make this team competitive but their season will be determined in their divisional games.  They must get over the hump of the Patriots and come out of the division better than .500 to challenge for playoffs – no easy task indeed.

Miami 1-2 SU 1-2 ATS – Huge confidence boost becoming the team that knocked the Patriots off in the regular season for the first time in 22 games.  However, based on their other performances that was an aberration and things should return to normal.  No depth will see this team struggle the rest of the way and get no more than 3 or 4 wins at the most.

AFC North

Pittsburgh 3-1 SU 1-3 ATS – Something just seems to be missing the past 3 weeks and we believe that coaching may be the issue.  This team just does not look as prepared as they were in seasons past.  This needs to be corrected for them to take advantage of a wide open AFC.

Baltimore 2-1 SU 3-0 ATS – One of only 2 teams that remain unbeaten ATS but as much as they have looked good we feel we will see the worst of the Ravens to come shortly.

Cleveland 1-3 SU 2-2 ATS – This team has picked up things from nowhere before and we feel they will get things in order and make a push for the playoffs from a tough start.

Cincinnati 0-4 SU 1-3 ATS – To the add to the issue of little depth on this team is that injuries are becoming a problem.  No cohesion in the locker room means the staff has lost this team and will struggle to win 4 games.

AFC South

Tennessee 4-0 SU 4-0 ATS – The only other undefeated team ATS is for real.  There defence dominates and their offence manages the game limiting mistakes.  There confidence is high and Fisher knows how to get the best from his players.  New division champs in the making.

Jacksonville 2-2 SU 1-3 ATS – After a 0-2 start, two tough victories means this team is back in the playoff race and could push the Colts to third best in the division.  Built to grind out wins the tough start was unlucky.

Indianapolis 1-2 SU 1-2 ATS – Peyton does not look himself, the receivers are a step slower and Bob Sanders is hurt.  Tough sledding the next couple of months for this team especially in this division.

Houston 0-3 SU 1-2 ATS – High hopes has not been met at all.  This team needs to refocus on their defence and running game if they are to win games.  Coaching staff will have to make adjustments to save some face starting in October.  Tough divisional schedule will make things difficult.

AFC West

Denver 3-1 SU 1-2-1 ATS – This team could easily be 1-3 and with their defence over plays and playing against their now inflated numbers because of a strong start offensively is the way to go.  Have not won anything yet, and have lost to the worst team in football.

San Diego 2-2 SU 2-1-1 – Despite their injuries they have fought hard in each game and this team will be the class of the west when it is all said and done.  They just have a swagger that no other 2-2 team seems to have.

Oakland 1-3 SU 2-2 ATS – Coaching change has been made but this team still losing too many games late.  That said they often get value and although their SU will be poor the ATS record should be maintained.

Kansas City 1-3 SU 2-2 ATS – This team is thin and rebuilding but they have enough weapons to come up with odd performance like week 4 against the Denver.  The problem will be they will be getting too points to play against them most weeks.
