Who are you and why are you reading this article?  This is a question that every one who wagers on sports or anything else for that matter must ask them self before they begin their daily, weekly, monthly or yearly gambling journey.

Most players should fit within one of the following outlined categories:

First and foremost there is the casual player that invests for the thrill of the bet only.  To this player the money lost is nothing more than the cost of entertainment; whether that means enjoying the thrill of victory or complaining over the agony of defeat.  This could also be known as the gambler that sees a line and makes a play just to have action.

Others are novices that started out as a pure recreational player and have now progressed. They consistently try to educate themselves and better their odds.  This category would encompass the vast majority of players out there today. This player is very much into sports, watches it, has knowledge of the games and makes a plays.

A small percentage of players are novice players that work diligently, do their homework, follows sports and everything to do with it, religiously.  This is a low to mid-grade player that has great knowledge of the game and good knowledge of sports investing but doesn’t use all the tools available to their potential.

A very, very select few are heavy players that rely on the money made during a specific season as a source of income during a specific season. This is a serious player that utilizes all the tools available in handicapping including such tools as scalps and middles and takes winning and losing both seriously but realistically.

Finally there is smallest category of all.  The true handicapping professional is by far the rarest of players out there at any given time and sometimes those successful at it for one year or multiple years can quickly fade into nowhere or regress to a different player.  This player dedicates each and every day to sports handicapping as a way of life or a vocation.

Notwithstanding these simplified categories, overall, more than likely no matter where you are on the sports investing totem pole, you are probably one of the many that are not disciplined enough of a player to get to the ultimate goal of making money consistently over a truly extended period of time on sports wagering.  In other words, no matter how many winners you pick you eventually still end up losing money.

One of the important first steps to improving your sports investing results is trying to honestly identify who you are as a player, where you want to go and most importantly if you are willing to work to get there.  In a very serious sense you must handicap yourself first and only then should you move on to handicapping the games.

Many people fail in the sports investing game because they do not properly identify what type of player they are.  One week they say to themselves they are playing for just for fun and recreation.  The next week they may come off some big wins and all of a sudden they want to be a high roller.  By the week after that they are starting to chase losses and by the end of the month their bankroll is done!

One of the aspects of sports investing that is most commonly overlooked is the need for self identity as a sports investor and to assimilate a plan that corresponds to that identity.  The plan must be realistic and is very much dictated by your bankroll amount. Once you identify yourself and put the plan in place it is of course the utmost importance that you stick to it!

There is no right or wrong when you are searching for your identity as a sports investor.  It would be a safe argument that most reading this are in the somewhere along the lines of the second or third category.  They, like many others have good knowledge of sports and sports gaming and are trying to learn and improve their skills.

If I am correct in my assumption the next step in identifying yourself is deciding whether you are truly committed to moving on to the next step where the financial rewards may be greater and more consistent.   Are you committed to sports investing or are you just involved?

To illustrate, believe it or not you must ask yourself the following question.  Are you the Chicken or the Pig? Before you answer lets look at the following popular quote whos’ author is unknown.

"The difference between 'involvement' and 'commitment' is like an eggs-and-ham breakfast: the chicken was 'involved' - the pig was 'committed'."

It’s a three pronged approach really, you must first identify yourself as a sports investor, then create a wagering plan and put your plan in place and then decide if you want to be the chicken or the pig – involved or committed.

The difference between involved and committed is the difference between winning consistently over an extended period of time and losing both long and short term in most cases.  Commitment can come in different forms whether it be handicapping on your own with all the due diligence required or perhaps even subscribing to a reliable sports service that is consistent – either way it is critical.  Take the time firstly to handicap your self and identify your behaviour in the sports investment scene because only then can you take the first step towards reaping financial rewards as the season progresses.
